Biography

Sergeant. No. 9 Squadron RAF, co-pilot, flight engineer. Son of Joseph Dowson Stephenson and Isabel Stephenson (née Wilson) from Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

Killed in action during a mission to Duisburg when his Lancaster W4159 was shot down by a German night fighter and crashed in the vicinity of Hackfort near Vorden. The entire crew was killed and is buried in the General Cemetery in Vorden.

There is a memorial at the site of the crash. In 2022, Omkijkpunt published the book “De 20 geallieerde gezichten van Vorden” (The 20 Allied Faces of Vorden). This book tells the stories of the 20 Allied soldiers buried in Vorden, including that of Maxwell Stephenson.
