Biography

Adrianus "Arie" Zoutenbier was captain on a trawler in Scheveningen. He was enlisted in March 1939 and drafted into the Dutch Navy. After basic training at Nieuwe Diep, he was stationed at the river gunboat Hr. Ms. Braga as a helmsman. After the ship was stranded on May 10th, 1940, due to the many enemy aircraft in the air, Zoutenbier and the cres of the Braga stationed themselves at the Fortress Pannerden to help the army soldiers at that fortress. When the fortress was surrenderd on May 11th, 1940 he and the other military werd imprisoned at Kleve in Germany and later at the prisoners of war camp Alto Carbo near Berlin. In june 1940 he was allowed to return home.
