Biography

Private. The Parachute Regiment, A.A.C., 10th Bn.

On 20 and 21 September, the headquarters of the 10th battalion of the Parachute Regiment, which defended this part of the Oosterbeek perimeter, was at Annastraat 2 in Oosterbeek. Civilians and soldiers were sheltering in the cellar. When a German soldier threw a hand grenade into the cellar, Private Albert Willingham protected the civilians by shielding them by standing in front of the hand grenade. Albert was killed in the process and was buried shortly afterwards in the garden of this house. After the war, he was reburied at the Airborne cemetery in Oosterbeek.
