Biography

John William Minchin, born on November 29, 1915, in Bourton-on-the-Water, was the third of six sons. His father was a baker. He joined the RAF early in the war, trained as a wireless operator/air gunner, and was posted to 49 Squadron at Scampton in October 1941.

On May 28, 1942, he married Jessie Irving in London but was recalled after a brief honeymoon for the Thousand Bomber raid.

By August 1942, he had completed a full tour in Hampdens and Manchesters and was sent to a training unit. Soon after, he joined John Hopgood’s crew in the newly formed 617 Squadron.

His plane was in the first wave and the second to attack Möhne Dam. The plane was hit multiple times by Flak and crashed on the far side of the dam. The mine was dropped too late and bounced over the Dam
