Biography

Eric Ewan, born in Wolverhampton on January 3, 1922, was the youngest of four children. He joined the RAF at 18 and trained as an air gunner, posting to 1654 Conversion Unit in January 1943.

Assigned to 49 Squadron in February, he flew his first mission on March 12. After two operations, Ewan was posted to 617 Squadron but remained with 49 Squadron for three more missions, including two over Berlin. Following the failed attack on the Sorpe Dam, the resumed operations, attacking Krefeld on June 21.

Ewan flew 14 more missions before being shot down by a night fighter near Offenbach on September 23, 1943. Five crew members were buried locally on September 26, while Gilbert Green and one unidentified member were laid to rest separately two days later.
Post-war, all seven were exhumed, identified, and reburied in Rheinberg War Cemetery.
