Gilbert John Green, born in Malling, Kent, on April 13, 1922, moved with his family to Southall, Middlesex, where he attended school and joined a local Air Cadet squadron.
Joining the RAF in 1941, he qualified as a bomb aimer in 1942, training at 25 Operational Training Unit and later 1654 Conversion Unit. Assigned to 49 Squadron in February 1943, he flew his first mission on March 12. After his second operation, he was posted to 617 Squadron but remained with 49 Squadron for three more missions, including two over Berlin.
Following the Dams Raid, Anderson's crew returned to 49 Squadron, continuing operations with an attack on Krefeld on June 21. They completed 14 more missions before their aircraft was shot down near Offenbach on September 23, 1943.
Five crew members were recovered and buried locally, while Green and another, thrown from the wreckage, were found later and buried separately. After the war, all seven were exhumed, identified, and reburied in Rheinberg War Cemetery
