Thomas Jaye was born on 3 October 1922 in Crook, Co. Durham, the son of James and Helena Jaye. His father was a miner, and after attending Wolsingham Grammar School, Jaye worked as an electrical engineer.
Joining the RAF in 1941, he trained as a navigator at Pan-American’s flying school in Miami, Florida. Back in the UK, he completed his training at RAF Wigsley in late 1942 and was posted to 106 Squadron on 28 December.
Over the next two months, Jaye completed 16+ missions before transferring to 617 Squadron on 29 March.
Just days later, in the early hours of 17 May 1943, AJ-S was shot down, killing him and his crew. The Germans were unable to individually identify Guy Pegler, Bill Long, Tom Jaye, and James Arthur, burying them together in a communal grave at Zuylen Cemetery, Prinsenhage, while Lewis Burpee, Gordon Brady, and Leonard Weller were laid to rest separately. After the war, all seven were exhumed and reburied in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery.
