Biography

Vincent Sanford MacCausland, born on 1 February 1913 in Tyne Valley, Prince Edward Island, Canada, was the oldest of five children to Burns and Edith MacCausland. Before joining the RCAF in 1940, he worked as a teacher.

After undergoing training as an observer and later as a bomb aimer, he successfully completed his first tour in 57 Squadron by late 1941. Following this, he received a commission and spent over a year in a training unit, serving as an instructor. In March 1943, he returned to 57 Squadron and then moved on to 617 Squadron in preparation for the Dams Raid.

On May 16, 1943 at 9:47 PM, the Avro Lancaster III ED887 of the 617 Squadron took off in Lincolnshire to take part in the attack on the Möhne Dam. At 2:58 am the Lancaster was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the surf near Castricum.

The entire crew died.
