Biography

Antony Joseph Bazeley Stone was born on 5 December 1920 in Winchester, Hampshire, to Joseph and Dorothy Stone. His father, originally from Russia, was a barber with a shop in the city. Stone trained as a chef before volunteering for the RAF in 1940.

Selected for wireless operator training, Stone also qualified as an air gunner. He joined 10 OTU at RAF St Eval. In January 1943, he transferred to RAF Swinderby, 97 Squadron and finally to 617 Squadron on 25 March 1943.

During the Dams Raid, Stone operated the motor that spun the mine to the required 500 rpm before the bombing run. On 14 September 1943, during 617 Squadron’s first major mission post-raid, Stone’s aircraft crashed and sank with the crew's bodies, except for the pilot. He has no known grave.
