Biography

Born on 6 December 1921 in Gloucestershire, Hill was the only child of Harry and Catherine Hill, who worked at Berkeley Castle. Raised on the estate, he attended the local school and later worked as a gardener at the castle. Initially joining the RAF as ground crew, Hill trained as a gunner when heavy bombers expanded operational opportunities. Posted to 9 Squadron in August 1942, he transitioned with them to Lancasters.

Hill then joined 617 Squadron. Following the Dams Raid, Hill continued flying with Maltby’s crew until their fatal mission on 14 September 1943 during 617 Squadron’s first major operation since the raid
