Biography

Son of Albert and Bessie (nee Wannamaker) Lawes of Frankford, Ontario. Husband of Norma Edith (nee Clarke) Lawes. Father of Albert Leroy and Glenn Allan Lawes. Brother of Cecil, Douglas, Jack and Allen. Was called up for military service on 21 October 1943 because of the National Resources Mobilisation Act. Left for England on 3 January 1945 and in early April 1945 joined the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, R.C.I.C. as reinforcements, who by then were in full battle in the liberation of eastern Holland. He died 4 April 1945 at the age of 30 in the fighting near Looër Enkweg. Marshall Lawes was initially buried in Vierakker and later reburied at the Canadian Cemetery in Holten. The inscription on his headstone reads: “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS”.

In Zuthpen, a street and a bridge have been named him.
