Biography

Before joining the Marines, Conway worked at Stockport Co-operative Dairy, Cheadle Health and was educated at Edgeley R.C. School. He trained in Plymouth as part of the elite Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment (RMBPD). He took part in Operation Frankton in December 1942. During this mission, Conway was deployed from the submarine HMS Tuna and paddled 80 miles up the Gironde Estuary in a two-man canoe called the Cuttlefish alongside Lieutenant John Mackinnon. After their canoe was damaged, they attempted to escape but were betrayed, captured by the Gestapo, and executed under Hitler’s "Commando Order." The execution site remains unknown, as well as the location of Ewart's remains. For this reason, he is commemorated on the Marine Memorial in Plymouth.
