Biography

Sheard volunteered for the Royal Marine Commandos, serving with the elite Boom Patrol Detachment in preparation for Operation Frankton.

Sheard paddled the "Conger" alongside David Moffatt, with the aim of sabotaging German shipping in Bordeaux. Tragically, their canoe capsized in the Gironde estuary and both men died of hypothermia on 8 December 1942. Sheard was lost at sea and Moffatt was washed ashore and subsequently buried by the Germans somewhere in the dunes. Both men are commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Sheard was married to Mabel Sheard, who was sadly killed in an air raid on December 10, 1942, just days after his death.
