Biography

Mabel Sheard was the sister of George Sheard, an RM commando. Mabel served as a Warden with the Civil Defence Wardens Service Plymouth during the war.

"Miss Sheard has shown courage and devotion to duty during air raids. When bombs damaged a building she entered, the wreckage amidst falling masonry and, after removing debris, succeeded in • extricating two people from amongst eleven others who had been killed. Then, with help, she successfully fought a fire and gave valuable assistance carrying messages through extensive bombing to the Report Centre.

On another occasion during the course of her patrol she discovered a time-bomb. She promptly made arrangements for the evacuation of the area and, despite fires and heavy bombing, led the residents to shelter."
