Korvettenkapitän Ernst Kühnemann graduated in 1904 as naval cadet. From September 1941 to August 1944, Kühnemann was the 'Hafenkommandant' of the Bordeaux port. In 1944, he commanded the Marine-Regiment „Kühnemann“ under Marine-Brigade „Weber“.

Ernst Kühnemann had been ordered to mine the harbour, but, as he declared under oath in 1949 and again in 1950, he was already in retreat. A return to the enemy-occupied city was no longer possible. He was captured in September 1944 and released on 27 March 1948.
