Jo was born on 15 October 1928 in Steenbergen and lived in Welberg. He was also known as Jo Gelten, after his stepfather who adopted him. Called up for military service, he enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Army and was sent to the Dutch East Indies as an infantry soldier. Jo served in the 413th Infantry Battalion under Colonel Jessen and eventually ended up in Tjimaoeng, Java.
On 21 December 1949, according to eyewitnesses, Jo was operating a 2-inch mortar that he had unfortunately positioned next to a tree. The first shell he fired hit an overhanging branch and exploded directly above him. He was fatally wounded in the rain of shrapnel that followed. Jo was 21 years old and found his final resting place in Bandung at the Dutch military cemetery Pandu.
