Corporal, KNIL
Johannes was born on 9 October 1908 in Ginneken and lived in Sint Anthonis. He joined the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) and left for the Dutch East Indies as a corporal. After the surrender of the KNIL on Java on 8 March 1942, Johannes was taken prisoner of war and interned with thousands of other KNIL soldiers in Southeast Asia. Towards the end of the war, he was in Singapore where, shortly after the Japanese surrender on 15 August 1945, he died on 22 September. The cause is unknown, but Johannes may have succumbed to the hardships of his captivity; he was 36 years old.
