Biography

Tlt.3-2-6 RI

Jacques was born on 26 February 1921 in Oosterhout. He enlisted for military service in the Dutch East Indies and, despite his lack of military experience, successfully committed himself to the formation and organisation of the Oosterhout company. Jacques attained the rank of second lieutenant in the 3-2-6 Infantry Regiment. Due to the outbreak of violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, he was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority.
On 10 July 1946, Jacques and Captain Jacobus Veldman undertook a reconnaissance flight over the positions of Indonesian revolutionaries on Java. The aircraft flew as low as possible, but came under fire from anti-tank guns and was hit by several shells. The pilot was unharmed, but Jacobus and Jacques were seriously injured and bleeding profusely. The pilot returned to the base in Semarang, but when the aircraft landed, both men had succumbed to fatal blood loss. Jacques was 25 years old.
