Sld.1-3 RI
Hendrik was born on 19 September 1928 in Oosterhout. Towards the end of the Second World War, he volunteered for military service with the Royal Netherlands Army in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, where the 1-3 Infantry Regiment was formed in December 1944. As a soldier, Hendrik and his unit were transferred from Zeeland to Coevorden and later to Mönchengladbach, where he guarded German prisoners of war.
Two days after Japan's surrender, on 17 August 1945, Soekarno and Mohammed Hatta proclaimed Indonesian independence. As soon as the British and Dutch began to restore the old colonial authority, the chaotic Bersiap period broke out in the following months of the revolution, during which foreigners considered enemies – Dutch, English, Chinese and Japanese – became victims of extreme violence.
As part of the Dutch military forces, Hendrik was sent to the Dutch East Indies in 1945 to help restore peace and colonial authority. On 8 November of that year, he first left for Aldershot in the United Kingdom, where he was provided with further equipment. On the 25th, he embarks on a month-long sea voyage to the East aboard the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt.
However, to the great anger of the Dutch military, Admiral Lord Mountbatten, commander of the South East Asia Command (SEAC), issued a landing ban on Java and Sumatra with effect from 2 November to prevent the situation there from escalating into a large-scale war in which the British troops stationed there would become embroiled. The Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was forced to divert to Ipoh in British Malacca, where it awaited the lifting of the landing ban.
When this was lifted in March 1946, Hendrik went ashore in Batavia. A few weeks later, his unit was transferred to the area around Bandung, where various scattered posts were occupied. During the First Police Action from 21 July to 4 August 1947, Cheribon, Tegal and Tjilatjap were occupied in succession. Hendrik was then stationed around Banjoemas, Soekaredja and Kroja on the southern coast of Java, where intensive military operations were being carried out.
At the end of October, the troops were concentrated in Tjilatjap, together with hussars and marines, for a landing in Mauritsbaai near Kalipoetjang and Pangandarang. During this landing operation, Hendrik was killed in Kalipoetjang on 2 November 1947. He was 19 years old and found his final resting place in Bandung at the Dutch military cemetery Pandu.
