Biography

Sld.4-3 RI

Johannes was born on 20 April 1926 in Oosterhout and lived in Breda. In the spring of 1947, he enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Army and was assigned to the 4-3 Infantry Regiment. Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, he was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. At the end of March 1947, he left for the East on the S.S. Sloterdijk, arriving in Batavia after a month at sea.

During the First Police Action from 21 July to 4 August 1947, Johannes' battalion was deployed at various locations in West Java along the demarcation line, where there was frequent fire contact with the fighters of the revolutionary Indonesian army. Towards the end of the First Police Action, the various companies reunited in Cheribon, after which they were transferred to Soemedang.

At the end of January 1948, Johannes was fatally wounded during a patrol there. He was taken to Bandung for medical treatment, but the help provided was to no avail. Johannes died on 28 January 1948 at the age of 21. Franciscus Kuijpers and Henricus Leenders from the same battalion also died on the same day; it is believed that all three were fatally wounded during the same action. Johannes was laid to rest at the Dutch military cemetery Pandu in Bandung.
