In 1940 Bangma joined the resistance and helped Jews go into hiding. His group was arrested in March 1945. He arrived in Sweden via Neuengamme, severely weakened, where he died on 2 May. He was later reburied in Stockholm. A street in Roordahuizum bears his name.
