Flying Officer Breed tragically lost his life in an aircraft accident in Norway on 10 May 1945.
In the early hours of that day, Breed and his crew departed for Norway, transporting 14 British paratroopers. As they crossed the North Sea, the flight was met with severe weather conditions, and thick cloud cover severely limited visibility on approach to Gardermoen Airport, north of Oslo.
Due to these hazardous conditions, the landing attempt was aborted, and most of the Stirling aircraft turned back to England. However, for reasons that remain unclear, several continued their approach. Breed’s aircraft emerged from the low cloud just 300 feet above ground level, approximately 1,500 metres from the runway. In an effort to climb, the Stirling lost power, crashed, and erupted into flames.
Local residents rushed to the site, but tragically, there were no survivors.
