- Period:
- Second World War (1939-1945)
- Rank:
- Commandant (Major)
- Unit:
- Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force
Citation:
"Appointed by Colonel de MAISTRE, Chief of the Services des Controles Techniques for Southern FRANCE, he landed immediately after the first landings at ST. TROPEZ. With characteristic energy, he was largely responsible for the Advanced Censor Stations, which followed hard on the troops, to seize mail, and screen it for information.
Faced with an unforeseen situation in that Seventh Army advanced very rapidly, by his quick evaluation of the situation, and flexibility of mind, he achived the well nigh impossible and secured mail at widely scattered points. He showed courage of a high order at MARSEILLE on 26/27th August 1944 when in order to accomplish his mission he ventured into part of the town not yet free of German combat troops.
Later with unceasing zeal he travelled day and night all over Southern France, establishing censorship situations, smoothing out difficulties and ensuring that the organisation was adequate and able to carry out its functions. Without his qualities of initiative and leadership the establishing would have been seriously delayed, and the loss to the Allied cause would have been incalculable."
