Biography

Adrianus Ophorst was the son of Major Adrianus Ophorst and Alida Camilla Schepman. His brother, W.D.A. Ophorst, became a major general.

After graduating from Leiden University of Applied Sciences and the Breda Military Academy, he began his career in the Fortress Artillery. He taught in Delft (1881–1890), served in various regiments, and was appointed Chief of Staff of the Defence Line of Amsterdam in 1903. In 1909, he became a colonel and commander of the 2nd Regiment of Fortress Artillery.

From 1913 to 1918, he was Commander of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, responsible during the mobilization for the First World War. He promoted physical education and organized military sports events in the Amsterdam stadium.

After retiring in 1918, he became a city council member for the Christian Historical Party.

Ophorst died on 17 May 1928 and was buried at Zorgvlied, together with his daughter, second wife and later also his first daughter Ada.
