Biography

Sibard joined the French merchant navy in 1939, serving with the Compagnie des Chargeurs Réunis until November 1941, when his ship, Cap Tourane, was seized in South Africa. He enlisted in the Free French Navy and soon volunteered for the paratroopers.

After training in Egypt at Camp Kabrit, he joined the 1st Air Infantry Company and took part in one of the first French SAS missions: sabotaging Heraklion airfield in Crete (June 1942). During the retreat, he was captured by German forces and sent to a Dulag Luft camp in Germany.

On 13 February 1943, Sibard escaped and crossed occupied Europe. A month later, his mother, Germaine-Thérèse Ballini, was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned until the war’s end.

Upon reaching Britain, Sibard was wrongly accused of espionage and jailed on 3 June 1943. Cleared of all charges, he was released in March 1945.
