Biography

Angelico Carta, originally an artillery officer, took command of the 51st Infantry Division "Siena" in January 1941, serving in the Greco-Italian War and later occupying the Peloponnese. In September 1941, his division transferred to eastern Crete.

By 1943, as lieutenant general, Carta oversaw the occupation of Sitia and Lasithi. A royalist, he was notably more restrained than German commanders.

Following Italy’s armistice, Carta coordinated with SOE’s Patrick Leigh Fermor to flee with staff and defense plans. They reached Egypt via Motor Torpedo Boat on 23 September 1943.

Later that year, he became commander of the XIII Army Corps in Sardinia, succeeding General Gustavo Reisoli.
