Alexander Rendel was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1940 and recruited for the SOE in Cairo by Colonel Thomas Dunbabin in 1943. Rendel was appointed to command operations in Lasithi, eastern Crete, under the nom de guerre "Alexis" (Aλέξης). He rose to the rank of major.

After the war, Rendel became a diplomatic correspondent for The Times.
