Barnes was commissioned 2Lt in the Royal Artillery on 27 December 1941 and seconded to the Special Operations Executive (SOE). As an SOE officer he was deployed to Crete (1944-1945) under nom de guerre "Pavlo". He joined the Foreign Service on 26 July 1948 and became Consul-General for Continental Greece,Crete,etc on 17 December 1962. He retired from H.M. Diplomatic Service in November 1964.
