Jan Jesionek was a Pole who served (under duress) as an SS officer in the Waffen-SS (12th SS Panzer Division "HitlerJugend") during World War II. Before his military service, Jesionek worked in a steel mill. He spoke fluent German. His father was imprisoned for a time under the German occupation forces.
He witnessed the massacre of Canadian prisoners of war up close in June 1944 and was a key witness in the case against Kurt Meyer after the war.
Jesionek was wounded on June 8–9, 1944, and recovered in a reinforcement center, from which he deserted in March 1945.
