Privates Lee and Gilbank were surrounded by Waffen-SS soldiers during the first days of the Normandy invasion. They soon fell victim to a large-scale massacre of Canadian prisoners of war in June 1944. Gilbank was murdered. A German officer fired a pistol into Lee's groin. At that moment, an artillery barrage hit the area. In the ensuing chaos, Lee managed to crawl, wounded, to a Canadian outpost. Lee survived the war.
