Biography

A member of Stab./SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 25 and driver of Kurt Meyer, SS-Oberscharführer Helmut Belke was fatally wounded on the night of June 8–9 while covering his unit during intense fighting near SS-Hauptsturmführer Horst von Büttner’s final moments. Struck in the stomach, Belke collapsed in a ditch and died shortly after. His body was returned to Ardenne Abbey for burial. Following the war, he was reinterred at Bazenville Commonwealth War Cemetery, where 335 German soldiers are buried. A photograph of his field grave exists.
