Jaan Jiskoot from Barendrecht was active in the resistance early on during the Second World War. What began with sheltering Jewish people in hiding soon progressed to distributing illegal newspapers such as Vrij Nederland and Trouw.
She lived with her brother, the electrician Cornelis Jacobus (Kees) Jiskoot, in a house that was used as a base by Johannes Post's resistance group in 1943-1944. They were involved in forging identity cards and hiding and transporting weapons. On 10 September 1942, Jaan and Kees Jiskoot were arrested after alleged betrayal by S.J. de Heer. Jaan was released after six weeks and immediately resumed her illegal work. Kees was imprisoned until the end of the war, successively in Amersfoort, Vught and Germany, and endured forced labour in Silesia.
