Gladwyn Jebb, 1st Baron Gladwyn was a distinguished British diplomat, civil servant, and Liberal politician. Educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford, he entered the Diplomatic Service in 1924 and held posts in Tehran, Rome, and London. During WWII, he briefly led the Special Operations Executive ftom 1940 to 1942 before returning to the Foreign Office.
Jebb played a pivotal role in the founding of the United Nations, serving as its first Acting Secretary-General (1945–1946). He later became the UK’s Permanent Representative to the UN (1950–1954) and Ambassador to France (1954–1960). Elevated to the peerage in 1960, he served as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Lords and was a Member of the European Parliament (1973–1976), advocating for European integration.
