John Burton served in 1942 with No. 62 Commando, the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF), and took part in Operation Aquatint—a covert raid on the Normandy coast. The mission was unsuccessful, and Burton was captured by German forces. He spent the rest of the war in prisoner-of-war camps. After liberation in 1945, he was posted by the Army to Siam and Sumatra. In later life, Burton settled in South Africa, where he died of cancer in 1985.
