Matterstock began his military career in 1909 with the Bavarian Army and rose to captain during World War I, earning several honors before being captured by the British in 1916. After the war, he briefly joined the Bavarian police before reentering military service in 1934. He held various command roles, including leading Infantry Regiment 330 and the 716th Infantry Division, which was stationed in occupied France. Later, he commanded the 147th Reserve Division in Ukraine and, in 1945, the short-lived Infantry Division Matterstock. After the war, he wrote his memoirs.
