Corporal Evans enlisted in the 1st Brecknockshire Battalion of the South Wales Borderers before being seconded to the commandos. He subsequently served with B Troop, No. 1 Commando, and took part in Operation Chopper. During that action, he and a fellow commando were killed at the age of only 24. Both men were left on the beach and later buried in Luc-sur-Mer cemetery. Their commanding officer, Hemming, was buried in the same cemetery after his death.
