Biography

Captain Tom Gordon-Hemming enlisted with the South Wales Borderers, later seconded to the Commando's. He served with No. 1 and No. 2 Commandos during the Second World War. As a young officer in No. 1 Commando, he led men during Operation Chopper at Luc‑sur‑Mer in September 1941, where two of his commandos were killed and buried in the local churchyard.

He was known for his outspoken character, his popularity among comrades, and his passion for cricket—he was a member of the MCC and even gave radio commentaries on matches while stationed in Gibraltar.

In accordance with his wishes, his ashes were interred at Luc‑sur‑Mer, beside the graves of the men who had fallen under his command. The town later named a square in his honour.
