Biography

Sergeant Du Cloo served in a detachment of the 2e Compagnie Torpedisten (Detachement Grondmijnversperringen Nr. 2) from Vreeswijk, under the command of Second Lieutenant of Engineers Louis Lucassen. This unit, about 40 men strong, had previously carried out maritime obstruction tasks in Huissen before being deployed to defend the inner city of Dordrecht, specifically the Vriesebrug and Vriesestraat sector.

On 12 May, the detachment distinguished itself with a fierce counterattack along the Vrieseweg against German forces of Gruppe De Boer. During these intense urban battles, Sergeant De Cloo was killed in the Baliestraat. Although some sources initially placed his death in the Vriesestraat, Red Cross correspondence confirmed his fall occurred in the Baliestraat, near the HBS school.
