Biography

Jacob Meertens was an electrical/radio engineer by profession and, after the capitulation, he and a friend managed to establish contact with an English coastal station using their own transmitter on a farm in IJsselmuiden. Meertens maintained radio communications and passed on information. The transmission group, which called itself Leopold Vindictif, had numerous members.
He also performed courier services and espionage at airports and militarily important objects.
He was a member of “Het Oranjevendel” in Amsterdam and the Secret Service in Bilthoven.
Through the infiltration of an undercover agent, the Germans were able to break up the group in early 1942.
On April 10, 1942, Meertens was arrested and remained in the “Oranjehotel” until approximately August 15, 1942.
He was then put to work in Germany and died in Camp Neuengamme.
