Biography

Antonius “Toon” Onland, son of Enbert Onland and Arendina Groothuis from Sint Isodorushoeve. (mobilised) Conscripted soldier in the 3rd Company, 3rd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment.

On 10 May 1940, the Germans invaded the Netherlands. The battalion to which Toon Onland belonged formed the reserve of the IIe Legerkorps in Leersum. It had already been weakened because parts of it had been assigned to all kinds of other tasks. The remainder had to reinforce the Stop Line (the last Dutch line) on the Grebbeberg on Sunday 12 May. During that action, they were surprised by the (temporary) breakthrough of the 3rd Battalion of the SS Standarte “Der Führer”, during which Toon Onland was killed around 11 p.m.

His name appears on the War Memorial on Beckummerweg in Sint Isodorushoeve.
