Awarded the Knight's Cross for his contribution to the evacuation of German soldiers and civilians from East Prussia at the end of the war. His actions enabled every transport ship under his supervision to survive and return again to continue picking up people. His ship personally picked up the men of Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 232 from Hela on the 08.05.1945 and thus saved them from Soviet captivity.
