Helmuth Werther was characterized by dedication and seafaring skills as well as by his courage and determination. He destroyed an enemy submarine and at least 3 enemy planes with his ship. His "Group Werther" achieved a reputation for submarine-hunting during its service the Aegean, and this meant that allied submarines generally left the supply traffic to the German held islands alone. For this contribution Werther received the Knight's Cross.
