Awarded for his actions near Chandogi in the late November of 1943. In this context Oberleutnant Grünwald and his Kampfgruppe performed outstandingly in the ever-changing combat situations. On two separate occasions Grünwald and the men of the 1./A.R. 18 formed a hardcore of men from which to rally other German troops, and thereafter provide tough resistance in addition to launching several counterthrusts that helped to facilitate later success. The accomplishments of Grünwald and his troops were pivotal in the achievements of the Division at this time, which was named in the Wehrmachtbericht for its performance.
