Awarded for his actions during the fighting east of Smolensk in 1943. He and his Bataillon were force marched to a particularly threatened sector of the divisional front. When the Soviets attacked their positions with strong artillery and tank support they were bloody repulsed, in no small part thanks to the fighting morale of the Grenadiers and the ruthless devotion to duty of their commander. He would later be recognized appropriately for his actions here.
