Here follows an excerpt from Bunzel’s Knight’s Cross recommendation…

“The swift thrust by Bunzel’s Bataillon into the burning city of Staraya Russa was launched on the commander’s own initiative, and by doing this the Russians were prevented from consolidating a defensive position on the eastern bank of the Polissty river. This enabled the Division to conduct a successful crossing over the Polissty river, and it also facilitated the further drive of the X. Armee-Korps against the Lowatj river.”
