“The swift thrust by Bunzel’s Bataillon into the burning city of Staraya Russa was launched on the commander’s own initiative, and by doing this the Russians were prevented from consolidating a defensive position on the eastern bank of the Polissty river. This enabled the Division to conduct a successful crossing over the Polissty river, and it also facilitated the further drive of the X. Armee-Korps against the Lowatj river.”
