The following newspaper excerpt (dated 07.09.1942) describes why Wintershoff received the Knight’s Cross…

“Unteroffizier Eduard Wintershoff… eliminated 8 Bolshevik tanks within 24 hours whilst conducting defensive combat against heavy enemy attacks in the northern sector of the Eastern front during the middle of August. Although he was wounded in this action he continued to operate the gun alone after his fellow Panzerjäger had become casualties. The bravery he displayed here in the face of strong enemy fire significantly contributed to the successful defense.”
