Biography

Jacobus "Co" Bakker, pseudonym Alblas, had a shop in electrical goods in Sliedrecht and was part of the Sliedrecht KP and the Albrecht Group. On the night of 5-6 November 1944, he and another crosser (Bertus van Gool) made the first trip by rowboat from Sliedrecht to Drimmelen. They thus mapped out for the Albrecht group the route for a permanent connecting line that eventually ran mainly between Sliedrecht and Lage Zwaluwe and from Werkendam to Drimmelen.
This liaison line served to transmit messages destined for the Dutch Bureau of Intelligence. It also carried hundreds of people, including Allied pilots or soldiers left behind after the Battle of Arnhem. On the way back, they took food and medicines (especially Insulin) that were urgently needed. As leader of the Linie-crossers in Sliedrecht, Co Bakker made the crossing 25 times.
