Citation:>br>Corporal Lewis W. Baldwin, Battery C, 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action on the 17th of July, 1943, 5 miles northwest of Vittoria, Sicily. Corporal Baldwin voluntarily went forward from his own lines, alone, driving a captured enemy 3-ton tankette, in order to secure information for the defense of the ridge. He was killed while returning to his own lines, under heavy machine gun and artillery fire. Corporal Baldwin's supreme courage and loyalty in his effort to serve his country was a true inspiration to all men in his organization, thus reflecting credit upon himself and his country. Entered military service from Dayton, Ohio.
