During February/March 1943 the Soviets attacked on both sides of Staraya Russa a total of 5 times, with their aim being to push back the German frontline here. However all such efforts were in vain. In this time Oberst Engelhardt and his Regiment would distinguish themselves, particularly by preventing a Soviet breakthrough in the Penna sector. Over the time period 23.02.-07.03.1943 the Regiment defeated about 60 attacks (in company to regimental strength) in this sector, destroying 63 Soviet tanks during the process. Oberst Engelhardt would receive the Knight’s Cross for this successful defensive stand.
