Biography

Studied in collège Saint Joseph then in a preparatory school in Bordeaux before entering the military academy of Saint-Cyr in 1930 - promotion "Joffre".
1932 : as 1st lieutenant, chose a fortress infantry regiment near Metz belonging to the Ligne Maginot.
May 1936 : transfered to Algeria as platoon leader in the Compagnie saharienne in Tabelbala.
February 1940 : integrated to the newly created 13e Demi-brigade de Légion étrangère (13e DBLE) in Sidi-Bel-Abbès.
May - June 1940 : Norway Campaign as 1st Lieutenant in Bjervik and in Narvik.
16 June 1940 : back to French Brittany, sailed to Jersey with other officers from the 13e DBLE.
21 June 1940 : from Jersey, disembarked in England where he joined in London the Free French Forces led by general de Gaulle.
Beginning 1941 : commanding the 3rd COY - 13e DBLE in Dakar.
February 1941 : Campaing in Erythrea : distinguished in the fightings in Keren and Massaoua.
3rd April 1941 : took 2 ennemy guns, 1 battery pennant and took 1 prisonner 1 Italian lieutenant-colonel and his 25 men.
8 April 1941 : obtained the surrender of fort 'Vittorio Emmanuele'.
April - May 1942 : as captain and company commander in the 3e Bataillon de la Légion étrangère, took part in operation 'Jock Column' to harass German forces around the defensive position in Bir Hakeim.
20 to 30 May 1942 : his unit is in charge of patroling between the V-shaped minefields from both sides (so called "marais") located North of Bir Hakeim where he successfully interdicted this zone to the German forces.
10-11 June 1942 : when the evacuation of the position was ordered, his unit was in charge of breaking through the German lines to allow the passage of lines to the WIA columns.
10 June 1942 : charging the enemy at the head of his company shouting "Legion forward!" hit by a deadly burst breaking his femoral artery.
